Location: Largo, MD

University of Maryland Global Campus seeks an Instructional Designer to join the USMx team. This position supports the University System of Maryland as a whole and follows the USMX initiative through the William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation.

The University System of Maryland (USM) partnered with edX, the international online learning platform founded by Harvard and MIT, to offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The USMx mission is to provide University System of Maryland Institutions access to innovative learning technologies as well as the resources, support, and planning necessary for strategic implementation of online learning. 
 

The Instructional Designer’s primary responsibility is to apply research on and best practices in adult learning theory, pedagogy, assessment techniques, and instructional design in the development and evaluation of online courses, particularly the development of MOOCs on the edX platform. Collaborating with Program Chairs, Faculty, and Subject Matter Experts, the Instructional Designer creates curriculum using a variety of technologies to develop targeted competencies and produce desired learning outcomes.  From helping Course Teams align and articulate learning objectives to importing and setting up content on the edX platform for online delivery, this position is expected to evolve with the needs and overall demand for services that the USMx team offers to the University System of Maryland. In addition, the Instructional Designer supports, tracks, and troubleshoots learner escalations and acts as 2nd tier support for USMx LMS issues. The Instructional Designer will work to ensure courses meet set specifications and standards of quality for online learning. The Instructional Designer will have a demonstrated ability to work independently and self-manage their design workload.

This position reports to the UMGC Instructional Design Portfolio Manager / USMx Program Manager and has some degree of a flexible work arrangement (FWA) with approval at the manager’s discretion and based on excellent performance and project management skills.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Support instructional design projects from start to finish under the guidance of the PM; which includes assisting in the development of project plans, monitoring project plan deliverables, and maintaining schedules; managing the workflow of the development process by coordinating the input from SMEs and other team members. Facilitating structured communications in order to meet deadlines with internal and external team members in a variety of contexts, including email discussions, conference calls, and face-to-face and online presentations
  • Develop and support best practices, promote engagement, quality assurance, and standards on the effective use of design strategies, web-based resources, multimedia technologies, accessibility, usability, and instructional software and systems for online course development with guidance from the Instructional Design Portfolio Manager
  • Conduct Quality Assurance reviews of courses prior to course launches in order to meet eLearning, ADA, IP, copyright, USMx and MOOC standards
  • Create faculty training resources and facilitate faculty development workshops online and/or on-site on best practices for online instruction
  • Exhibit a solid technology background and apply effective pedagogical applications of technology to teaching and learning in a higher educational instructional setting
  • Provide troubleshooting for USM Instructional Designers and course teams and follow-up on issues within the USM regarding eLearning questions/concerns
  • Support the learner escalation process through trouble-ticket management, tracking, and resolution
  • Support the MOOC publication process with course teams to include: timelines, scheduling, publishing pages, facilitating previews, minor edits, maintaining updated templates, and communication with the teams with process updates
  • Maintain course calendars with course runs and export/import (copy) new course runs as dictated by the schedule
  • Display a high degree of energy and flexibility in a changing, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to professionally and tactfully juggle multiple projects, tasks, and requests with a high-level of organization and communication
  • Implementing the learning design/redesign process: assessing curriculum needs, analyzing learner background knowledge, instructional requirements, data, determining learning objectives and outcomes, and designing or redesigning and developing engaging instructional experiences that most effectively target learning outcomes
  • Leading and facilitating clear and professional communication
  • Assist the Instructional Design Portfolio Manager / Program Manager and perform other job-related duties as assigned
  • Largo, Maryland location, with 5%-20% travel in the State of Maryland

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • One to three (1-3) years of related experience as an Instructional Designer with project management of learning design projects, instructional design experience in higher education, experience developing courses and materials for progressive educational paradigms
  • Familiarity with current trends and developments in learning design and higher education including MOOCs, micro-credentials, open educational resources, competency-based learning, adaptive learning and personalized learning
  • Knowledge of the instructional systems design process, learning theories, ADDIE, Backwards Design, and Quality Matters Rubrics
  • Demonstrated experience with learning management systems and course creation, including media, accessibility, assessment, and quality assurance (prepared to show portfolio of work)
  • Ability to work remotely without supervision, utilize satellite offices, maintain flexibility, and work independently as needed
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Strong technical and writing skills with an eye for detail

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Masters or other post-graduate education in Instructional Design, Learning Design, Learning Experience Design, or Instructional Technology w/ coursework in Instructional Design
  • Project Management
  • Video editing skills
  • Background in developing & conducting training
