University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is seeking Secondary Instructors (SI) who facilitate synchronous speaking practice sessions for world language courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.
Synchronous speaking activity is one of the core pedagogical elements in world languages education. UMGC World Languages and Cultures program offers unique and exceptional educational experience for students (for online course delivery method) by offering weekly synchronous speaking practice sessions.
Required Education and Experience:
Master's degree in foreign language pedagogy, linguistics, literature or related field
Native or near-native fluency in one of below languages and excellent command of English: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese or Spanish
1-2 year(s) of experience teaching, or as a Teaching Assistant in above language(s)
Prior higher education teaching experience and / or experience educating adult learners
Experience with online teaching environments, preferably in Desire to Learn (D2L)

The Secondary Instructor (SI) Role at UMGC

Your role as a Secondary Instructor (SI) member will be to:
Facilitate synchronous speaking practice sessions utilizing Skype for students enrolled in world language classes throughout the 8 week-long semesters on a weekly basis.
Provide speaking practice sessions on various times on several different days to accommodate global student body.
Actively engage students and motivate them to succeed and convey a genuine energy and enthusiasm for their language learning.
Actively manage speaking practice log to provide rich, helpful feedback and assessment after each session.
Help students develop language proficiency and gain an understanding of culture.
