Job Summary

The Director is both a strategic and hands-on leadership position that is responsible for ensuring the daily operational activities of our fraud prevention run smoothly and effectively. This person will have direct oversight of our fraud prevention system and must have strong experience in fraud detection systems.

This role will lead our fraud prevention team with responsibility for the daily management, reporting and oversight of student financial fraud risk in accordance with appropriate federal, state and institutional regulatory bodies and policies. Along with the Assistance Vice President of Compliance, Fraud Prevention and Training, the Director is responsible for implementing and maintaining the University's identity verification software. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to detect and prevent fraudulent student activities. This involves analyzing data for suspicious activity, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, and staying current on emerging fraud trends to safeguard the organization and our students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement effective strategies to prevent and detect identity theft, waste and abuse.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders in Admissions, Advising, Tuition Planning, Registrar, Student Accounts, and others to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to fraud prevention and detection. Collaborate to provide training to staff and students on fraud prevention measures and raise awareness about potential risks.
  • Continuously review and enhance fraud prevention and detection processes and tools based on evolving threats and organizational needs.
  • Analyze recorded data and patterns to identify suspicious student activity. Conduct thorough investigations into suspected incidents of fraud, working closely with internal stakeholders, external agencies, and/or law enforcement as needed.
  • Prepare and present reports to leadership on a regular basis. Maintain policy and procedure documents. Maintain accurate records on fraud incidents, investigations, and outcomes. Prepare Department of Education Office of Inspector General referrals.
  • Provide oversight and direction to fraud prevention team members in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures. Coaches, mentors, and develops staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities.
  • Complete ad hoc projects related to fraud management including implementation of fraud prevention and detection software as well as developing internal fraud detection methods
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in Business Administration, Accounting or related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years in fraud prevention and investigations required, in higher education strongly preferred.
  • Certified Fraud Examiner designation strongly preferred
  • Experience with PeopleSoft, Workday, and Salesforce
  • A minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience including managing remote team members
  • Experience with enterprise level fraud detection and investigation  software.

Skills

  • Familiar with regulations and guidance related to fraud for higher education industry.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for interactions at all levels across the organization
  • Must be resourceful, creative, innovative, results driven, and adaptable.
  • Ability to perform problem solving in a complex demanding environment by drawing on a pool of technical experience, business understanding and good judgment.
  • Critical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office especially Excel
