Career Advising Specialist

Job Location: Hybrid in Adelphi, MD - occasional travel required

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks a Career Advising Specialist for the Career Services unit of the Office of Student Affairs. The successful candidate will provide intensive and targeted job search assistance to business student and alumni groups for specific employer recruiting events, as well as general career advising, to University of Maryland Global Campus's (UMGC) non-traditional students and alumni. Focusing on active-duty military and veterans, the chosen candidate will use both online and face-to-face platforms to develop and deliver workshops and seminars on job seeking strategies and career-related topics, internships, and career options; administering career assessments, assisting with choosing a major, and the job search process; and providing information on graduate school programs and the application process. The successful candidate will also assist in conducting employer and on campus outreach activities and assist with the development and delivery of career related workshops and networking events.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Intensive job search preparation: work closely with the employer relations team and academic program directors to identify and prepare target groups of students and alumni for specific employer hiring events; oversee and deliver intensive resume review and subsequent interview preparation

Career advising provide career counseling online, by telephone, and in person for UMGC transitioning military and veteran students and alumni; administering and interpreting career assessment inventories when appropriate; providing assistance to students and alumni with career planning, resume writing, interview techniques, internships, and job search skills

Educational programming: assist with the planning and execution of career-related virtual and face to face workshops, seminars and networking events to meet the needs of transitioning military and veteran UMGC students and alumni

Employer relations: assist in establishing and maintaining employer relationships: assist in the organization of virtual and face-to-face job fairs, other networking events, and the maintenance of the online jobs database

Other job-related duties as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. The successful candidate must have four (4) years of experience providing career advising services including the use of career assessments; knowledge developing and critiquing resumes and cover letters; previous direct experience in career advising and translating military experience to civilian careers for transitioning military and veterans; knowledge of effective interviewing skills; effective presentation skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; knowledge of federal hiring practices and labor market trends; experience with online job and internship boards and career services web-based tools; and excellent customer service skills.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master's degree in counseling, human resources, college student personnel services, higher education, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in providing career and/or internship advising in a college/university setting; and experience with CSO Interface, career services software, the MBTI, the Strong Interest Inventory, and Microsoft and Google applications.

Hiring Range:

$54,000.00 - $58,000.00
