Associate Vice President Student Success

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is seeking an Associate Vice President (AVP) Student Success. Reporting to the Vice President of Student Success our new AVP for Student Success serves as a visionary and servant leader, fostering an environment of excellence, engagement, and learner centricity across coaching teams while collaborating closely with Student Affairs colleagues and other UMGC leaders. This leadership role is pivotal in shaping organizational strategies that drive student success, inclusivity, and engagement. The AVP sets the tone for employee engagement, ensures a culture of care and innovation, and provides a framework for professional growth through training, mentoring, and support.

Relocation to the Maryland/Washington, D.C./Northern Virginia metro area is required. Upon relocation, hybrid onsite for an estimated three (3) days per week.

Primary responsibilities are as follows:

Leadership in Coaching Strategy & Execution

  • Develops and implements innovative success coaching strategies to establish a best-in-class advising model
  • Champions a culture of care and anticipates student needs, demonstrating a deep understanding of UMGC's diverse student population, and always doing and creating a culture of doing what is in the best interest of the student

Student Success Initiatives and Outcomes

  • Designs and delivers services, activities, and engagement opportunities that enhance the student academic experience
  • Drives initiatives aimed at improving student persistence, retention, and graduation rates, ensuring alignment with UMGC's mission and values
  • Develops and executes initiatives which effectively helps students return to UMGC through reinstatement and readmit

Collaborative Partnerships

  • Builds and sustains collaborative relationships with key departments, including Admissions, Global Military Operations, Academic Affairs, Financial Solutions, Student Communications, Student Engagement and Achievement, Financial Aid, and Academic Services
  • Leverages a coordinated student success network to optimize support and intervention strategies
  • Works cross departmentally to coordinate on university-wide initiatives and effectively communications and implements change across the coaching teams

Data-Driven Decision Making

  • Uses data and national best practices to inform and guide student success strategies
  • Regularly evaluates plans in partnership with schools to determine their effectiveness and identify opportunities for evidence-based improvements

Performance Monitoring and Continuous Improvement

  • Establishes and monitors goals, objectives, and key performance indicators to assess the effectiveness of outreach, interventions, and student support strategies
  • Facilitates continuous improvement in processes, practices, and coaching methodologies to ensure consistent, high-quality evaluation and goal setting for employees

Resource Optimization and Best Practices

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of services, ensures optimal resource utilization, and promotes alignment with national best practices and the university's mission
  • Fosters a culture of evidence-based decision-making and innovation in student support and intervention

Leadership in Staff Development

  • Provides effective direction and leadership to a large, remote workforce, fostering high engagement and performance in a dynamic, high-growth environment
  • Develops and implements training programs for high-performing leaders in collaboration with the Director of Training

Strategic Planning for Retention and Innovation

  • Assesses and enhances retention activities, services, and programs to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving higher education landscape
  • Continuously seeks opportunities for innovation in alignment with institutional goals

Representation, Advocacy, Engagement, and Participation

  • Represents the Vice President for Student Success and the Student Affairs Division in meetings and institutional initiatives as required.
  • Actively participates in on-site and interactive meetings during normal business hours, including regular Office of Student Affairs meetings.
  • Performs other responsibilities necessary to achieve the educational objectives of the university and/or as assigned by the Vice President for Student Success

Required education & experience: A demonstrated ability to get things done. An earned Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning and at least seven (7) years of effective leadership in student success; evidence of increasing levels of responsibility and demonstrated results working in an academic setting; a  commitment to shared governance, consensus building, and a team-approach to management and leadership.

Preferred education & experience: An earned Master's degree in student

affairs, higher education, or a related field; proven experience with online universities and knowledge of student success best practices, including emerging software tools (e.g., PeopleSoft, Salesforce); strong leadership, fiscal management, and collaboration skills and expertise in data-informed decision-making and ability to mobilize cross-functional teams toward shared goals; demonstrated success in co-curricular program development and institutional partnerships that enhance the student experience; sophisticated understanding of student development theory, current trends in student success, and the ability to manage complex projects in ambiguous environments; as well as excellent communication skills, including the ability to listen, synthesize input, build consensus, and effectively lead group discussions and presentations.

Hiring Range:

$175,000.00 - $190,000.00
