Senior Vice President, Global Military Operations

Exempt, Regular, Full-time

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks an experienced, servant leader as Senior Vice President, Global Military Operations (SVP GMO). Reporting directly to the President, the SVP GMO will be a member of the Senior Executive Team (SET) and serve as the University's focal point for military and veterans affairs.  This leader must have a bias for getting things done and an eye for creating efficiencies across three geographically separated divisions. The SVP GMO will be an influencer who easily builds trust and sets an example of enthusiasm, resilience, and calmness under pressure. The SVP will be an expert in using analytical data and metrics on global military students to drive the right decisions at the right time. This executive will drive the next generation of education services for the military students beyond the current hybrid and online experiences. They will enhance UMGC's reputation as a military and transfer-friendly University with high quality personalized learning experiences and exceptional military student support.

Relocation to the MD/DC/Northern VA metro area is required. Upon relocation, hybrid onsite three (3) days per week or more as necessary.

Additional accountabilities include the following:

  • Leading and developing a team serving military-affiliated students in more than 20 countries and approximately 200 locations
  • Providing oversight of UMGC operations in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, and the United States
  • Ensuring compliance and efficient administration of DOD overseas contracts and MOUs with military bases Stateside
  • Working with the Chief Marketing Officer to ensure local GMO marketing efforts are consistent with UMGC global marketing campaigns and brand vision
  • Coordinating with the Chief Student Affairs Officer to ensure advising support provided by Military Education Coordinators and Program Coordinators are similar to the support provided by the Success Coaches to ensure a consistent global student experience
  • Supporting the efforts of the Chief Academic Officer to build the next generation academic model which includes a greater integration into the academic operations, management, development, and utilization of the overseas faculty
  • Pursuing opportunities to utilize AI within GMO to improve the student experience and increase operational efficiency
  • Creating a GMO culture that emphasizes agility, accountability, and action
  • Supervising key University initiatives including Winter Intersession, Credit for Military Rank, DMA Project, and the USNCC Partnership
  • Seeking the expansion of education services overseas based upon the changing operational requirements of the U.S. military overseas
  • Seeking the expansion of education services stateside based upon the number of military bases without an MOU with UMGC
  • Representing the University on the entire range of issues affecting military personnel and veterans, such as voluntary education, veterans' affairs, and the ways in which these and other programs are administered
  • Interacting with the VOLED service chiefs and ESOs, government contracting officials, and major national associations, such as CCME and NAIMES, that advise the DoD on educational and operational issues within the military community
  • Serving as a steward to the budgeting process, ensuring that overall spend and ROI are used diligently
  • Committing to the development of leaders across GMO's entire organization in support of promoting from within
  • Maintaining a culture of compliance within the state, federal, legal, and regulatory environment
  • Traveling overseas and to locations in the United States to ensure standardization within the global divisions
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned by the President

Required education and experience: A demonstrated ability to get things done. An earned Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning; at least 10 years of progressively responsible senior leadership experience including military uniformed or government civilian service; former active-duty senior officer or senior government civilian employee associated with the military, and a graduate of a senior-level military education program; the gravitas and charisma to present, persuade, and influence at the senior executive level; willingness and ability to understand working within and remaining compliant with the state and federal regulatory environment; successful experience using data, metrics, analytics, and KPIs toward decision making, innovation, and continuous improvement; and a track record of being an inspiring, high-energy, team-player/coach able to quickly gain credibility and build relationships across the organization.

Preferred experience: At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience leading large organizations located across multiple countries and time zones; in-depth knowledge of the military voluntary education programs, and military and veteran education benefits; overseas military experience, service headquarters experience, and/or command experience; a general understanding of American higher education, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to maintain collaborative and productive relationships with other senior leaders and constituents at all levels internal/external to the organization; demonstrated success in building mutually beneficial partnerships within the military community and leading and developing talent in a multicultural workplace; excellent verbal and written communication skills; and particularly adept at problem solving and conflict resolution while balancing competing interests.

Hiring Range:

$420,000.00 - $455,000.00
