Our administrative offices in Asia, and this position, are located at Yokota Air Base, Tokyo Prefecture, Japan and require relocation.
University of Maryland Global Campus in Asia seeks an Assistant Vice President for Faculty Affairs. Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President/Associate Dean and as part of Asia's senior leadership team, the Assistant Vice President, Faculty Affairs (AVP) will be adept at collaborating with peers to address shared needs and solve common problems. The AVP will also effectively liaise with other units across the division and University to support the work of the division and to advance UMGC academic priorities.
The Assistant Vice President will collaborate closely with the Chief Learning Experience and Success Officer (CLESO) and cross-functional teams across the University, including the Global Academic and Learning Enterprise (GALE), the Faculty Affairs and Scheduling Team (FAST), and Learning Experience Design (LED) to support faculty success, instructional excellence, and student outcomes.
At the direction of the Associate Vice President/Associate Dean, the AVP is responsible for implementation and administration of assigned UMGC (and, if applicable, partnership) degree programs and faculty in accordance with the policies, procedures, and standards of each University and in accordance with the provisions of the military contracts. The AVP will recruit, hire, train, supervise, evaluate, and support both faculty and staff as assigned; oversee programs of study and course selection; as well as provide ongoing staff and faculty mentoring and development.
The AVP is the deputy administrator for providing leadership and mentoring of faculty and staff offered by the UMGC Asia division. At the direction of the Associate Vice President/Associate Dean, the AVP will represent UMGC in Asia in global operations and provide creative and innovative solutions for growing established programs and starting new programs. The AVP is a highly visible position within headquarters, at all bases in the division, and with assigned faculty. The AVP will embrace the vision of creating a vibrant academic community of teaching professors and will work with faculty and staff to provide the best possible student experience at UMGC.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Serves as deputy to the division's Associate Vice President/Associate Dean
- Ensures accountability for regular and ongoing review and support of assigned faculty teaching
- Manages assigned faculty and ensures quality standards for academic curriculum and programs
- Ensures quality of course delivery to include, but not limited to faculty recruitment, faculty development, and syllabi review
- Provides administrative oversight of all faculty in the division
- Evaluates faculty performance and provides effective feedback and coaching
- Evaluates faculty course clearances
- Serves as initial investigator concerning student grievances and academic integrity issues
- Supervises peer mentoring program
- Supervises graduate and special programs
- Reviews faculty course and schedule assignments in collaboration with Assistant VP, Enrollment Operations
- Supports academic courses and all programs offered in the assigned overseas division
- Collaborates with the Director, Academic Operations and Student Services, and other university units to provide academic support to the Associate Vice President/Associate Dean (e.g., grade appeals, student complaints, curricular issues, faculty rank and promotion, course evaluations, graduate programs, and other academic initiatives and projects)
- Ensures that assigned faculty understand our mission and adhere to policy and procedures to support student learners
- Provides faculty with ongoing opportunities for engagement in curricular initiatives
- Coordinates and administers all assigned academic programs
- Acts as a team-player and self-starter with the ability to confidently complete leadership duties as described
- Coordinates, at the direction of the Associate Vice President/Associate Dean, the submission of proposals with UMGC and partners for curriculum additions, changes, and deletions
- Collaborates with academic units across the University, including CLESO, GALE, FAST,LED, and other University stakeholders to support faculty development, instructional modalities, academic quality, and student success initiatives.
- Serves as a key liaison between UMGC in Asia Academic Affairs and university units to ensure alignment of divisional faculty initiatives with institutional priorities related to teaching excellence, learner engagement, and instructional innovation.
- Provides leadership for faculty development initiatives, including professional learning opportunities that support effective teaching across instructional modalities and emerging pedagogical practices.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
Required education & experience: A demonstrated ability to get things done. An earned Master's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited institution of higher learning or a foreign degree equivalent; seven (7) years of experience in higher education including in the field of collegiate teaching; demonstrated experience supervising faculty; strong and articulate communicator with clear and effective verbal and written communication skills, an enthusiastic supporter of adult education within the U.S. military community; adaptable, able to influence key stakeholders, negotiate, and solve problems; the ability to use UMGC systems and the University learning management system (LEO) and competency-based (ELM) programs; and proven experience exercising discretion, confidentiality, as well as the ability to consistently demonstrate organizational and analytical skills.
Preferred education & experience: An earned doctoral degree from a U.S. regionally accredited institution of higher learning as well as graduate administration and teaching experience.

Hiring Range:
$110,000.00 - $130,000.00Additional Compensation:
